Countryside

In Santiago de Compestela we stayed outside the city a ways because there was a convention in town that took up all the reasonably priced hotels.  At first I was bummed, but Jeffrey and I took a walk around the neighborhood and found an abundance of interesting things.

First we found that again, all the homes seem to have grapes growing, as well as gardens.

We also happened upon a group of boys playing futbol on a basketball court, which is common.  Jeffrey endeavored to talk with them in Spanish.  While they were mostly friendly, we are certain that they got a chuckle out of his Spanish.  That said, their first language isn't Spanish, it's Galecian, a dialect of the region.  One of the boys spoke some English, but told Jeffrey he wasn't all that interested in learning it.  Our boys were with us and terribly shy...imagine that.  At any rate, we moved on and Colby and Jeffrey popped in a bar for a drink while Willie and I went on back to the hotel.  Jeffrey and Colby lucked into a very local place and after a little time, they ended up sitting and chatting with Jeffrey and Colby for a while telling them about the area, the wine and grapes.  Once gentleman even did a card trick for them, probably in Galecian.  Either way, he was not understood in any way, but very much appreciated.  Those kinds of experiences are what you want on a trip like this.
